Home Guard Windows in Knoxville
Why We Partnered With a Small Family Plant in Indiana Instead of a National Brand
When we started Tennessee Window and Door Works, we wanted one window we could stand behind completely. So we went looking for the best one we could put our name on.
We ended up in Grabill, Indiana.
We can install other brands, and we do. But Home Guard is our main manufacturing partner. This page tells you who they are, what is actually inside their windows, and what that means for a Knoxville homeowner.
Who Is Home Guard Industries?
Home Guard Industries has been building doors and windows for over 40 years. They started with heavy steel security doors and grew into windows from there. They are still family owned, and they describe themselves as a debt free company.
That second part sounds boring. It is not. A debt free manufacturer does not have a bank telling them to cut corners to hit a number this quarter. They can say no to cheap material. A lot of companies cannot.
Today they build out of a 170,000 square foot plant sitting on 22 acres in Grabill, Indiana.
About Grabill
Grabill is a town of about 900 residents in northern Indiana, supported by antique shops and custom cabinet shops. It is a place built on hand work.
That matters because of who works in the plant. Home Guard describes what they do as Amish craftsmanship, and they put it plainly: precision, discipline, and pride in every detail. No shortcuts. No compromises.
That is their own description of their own shop, and it lines up with where the plant sits and who works in it.
Jeff Ludy at The Window Experts described Home Guard as a “boutique” manufacturer. That is a fair word for it. They are not trying to be the biggest. They are trying to be the best small one.
Watch an Outside Expert Break It Down
We are a dealer. Of course we like this window. So do not just take our word for it.
Jeff Ludy runs The Window Experts out of Texas. He reviews window brands on YouTube and he does not sell Home Guard. He pulled the Innovations line apart and walked through what is in it.
He also wrote the review up if you would rather read it. You can find it on his site here.
The Two Window Lines We Install
Home Guard builds two lines of vinyl windows. We can quote you either one, and which one is right for you depends on your house and your budget.
Innovations
Innovations is the flagship line, and it is the best window we can put in your home.
It starts with the vinyl. Home Guard uses premium virgin vinyl, never recycled, so it will not yellow, warp, or break down over time. The frames and sashes are thick walled and precision welded at the corners to keep air and water out.
What you get in an Innovations window:
- Fusion welded frame and sash, so the corners are one solid piece instead of screwed together
- Insul-Core frame insulation, which fills the frame instead of leaving it hollow
- Innergy composite reinforcement at the meeting rail, which is soy based instead of metal
- Triple weather stripping on the sash
- A Magna-Tite bottom seal that pulls shut magnetically, the same way your refrigerator door does
- EZ-Lift balance system and EZ-Tilt hardware for cleaning from inside
- Dual cam locks anchored into the sash reinforcement
- FlexScreen included standard
Available as double hung, slider, casement, awning, picture, bay, bow, and garden. They also build custom shapes like half rounds, eyebrows, octagons, and trapezoids, so odd openings in older Knoxville homes are not a problem.
Twelve exterior color tones are available, plus wood look laminates for the interior if you want the look of wood without the maintenance.
HomeStar
HomeStar is the value line. It is a lower price point, but it still uses Cardinal insulated glass, still has a fusion welded sash and frame, still has interlocking sashes and a forced entry rated night latch, and still carries the glass breakage warranty. Home Guard also states on their own website that HomeStar windows are backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.
If you are doing a whole house on a tight budget, or you have a rental property, HomeStar is often the smarter call. We will tell you straight which one fits.
What Is Actually Inside the Window
This is the part most salespeople skip. It is the part that decides whether your window is still good in twenty years.
The Glass
There are over a thousand window makers in the United States. There are only a handful of companies that actually make the glass. Cardinal Glass is generally considered the best of them.
Home Guard uses Cardinal insulated glass units. That is a real quality signal, and it is one an outside reviewer pointed to as well.
Home Guard sells that glass package under the name Conservision. It comes in more than one level. The right one depends on which side of your house the window sits on and how much sun it takes. We go through the options with you in person so you do not overbuy.
The Vinyl
Home Guard uses virgin vinyl, never recycled. Recycled vinyl is cheaper, and it is more likely to yellow and get brittle over the years. In Home Guard’s words, quality starts with the vinyl.
The Seal
A window fails at the seal. When the seal goes, moisture gets between the panes and you get that foggy look that never wipes off.
Home Guard reports that in independent lab testing meant to simulate 50 years of heat and cold cycling, their Conservision and Endur combination failed at a rate of 0.5 percent. They report conventional single seal butyl units failed at 55 percent in the same testing.
That is Home Guard’s own published figure from their own testing program. We are repeating it as their claim, not as an independent finding. But it lines up with the fact that they are willing to put a lifetime seal failure warranty behind it, and companies do not warranty things they expect to fail.
FlexScreen
You have probably fought with a window screen before. You bend the frame, it kinks, and now it never sits right again.
FlexScreen replaced the rigid frame with spring steel. It squeezes in, pops out, and does not kink. It was on Shark Tank. Home Guard says they were the first company in the world to license the technology, and it comes standard on every window they build.
Earthwise Group
Home Guard has been a member of the Earthwise Group since 2011. Earthwise is a group of regional vinyl window manufacturers who build to a shared standard, which is part of how a smaller plant can deliver national brand engineering at a regional price.
The Warranty
Home Guard backs these windows with a lifetime limited warranty. It covers the vinyl, the moving parts, the sealed glass unit, and even accidental glass breakage for as long as you own and live in your home. Most window warranties do not cover a baseball through the glass. This one does.
Like any warranty, there are terms and limits you should read. We bring the full document to your free in home consultation and walk you through it line by line before you sign anything. No surprises three years later.
Why This Means a Better Price in Knoxville
Here is the simple version of how window pricing works.
When you buy from a big national brand, your price is paying for the window, the installation, the national advertising budget, the franchise or affiliate fees, and the commission for the salesperson who sat at your kitchen table for three hours.
When you buy from us, you are paying for the window and the installation. That is it.
We are a local Knoxville company working directly with the plant that builds the product. There is no middle layer. There is no franchise taking a cut off the top of your job.
Same category of quality. Less overhead in the price.
